1) I have chosen a very plain invitation for my wedding. I would like to use a colored ink. Can you tell me if there are particular colors that work well on invitations? In addition, are there others that do not work as well?
Colored inks will present a nice contrast and/or complement for invitations or envelopes. Many people coordinate the ink color with the color of the liner on the inside of the envelope. As esthetically pleasing as the colors may be, do not discard the elegance that a crisp black ink can give to an invitation. Black is the traditional color of choice, particularly for invitations for evening affairs.
2) I am getting married on Valentine’s Day. My invitation is dark red. I would like to use silver ink, but I am worried that it won’t show up, or it will flake off the invitation. Can you recommend a type of ink that will give me a classic look?
The biggest concern when using metallic ink is making sure that you use an ink that will be visible on your dark red invitation. Metallic silver and metallic gold will coordinate well with the color red, but it can get tricky if it is not dark enough – and that is hard to gauge when printing your own invitations. Another option that will give you a classic look and ensure that your type will stand out is black ink in a bold typestyle. The black/red combination is elegant, and a bold typestyle works best with dark paper colors because it increases readability. Ultimately, it becomes a personal preference. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
