I’ve noticed that baby showers seem to bring out the best in people. My family and friends all seem to go all out when they are invited to celebrate the upcoming birth of a new baby. At my own baby showers, I have also noticed that when it comes to wrapping something special for a little one, people seem to really go to great lengths to make their gifts stand out. For my children, I received a wealth of gifts in pretty pastel bags with coordinating tissue paper, as well as large boxes wrapped in paper with the most delicate patterns printed all over them. The bows on each gift seemed larger than the last. Based on this, I now take extra care at making my own gifts stand out, too, so they don’t get lost in the midst of all of the beautiful offerings presented to the expectant mother. And I have to admit, it’s rather fun trying to find ways to make a baby gift a little different from all of the others.
If you want to really make a statement with your gift at the next baby shower you attend, think about what everyone else will do, then try a different tack. For instance, for a baby shower for a boy, most gifts will be in soft shades of pale blue. So take a different approach and select bright red or lime green paper, or even a deep royal blue or navy, to make your gift pop against the lighter hues. Or, for a shower celebrating a baby girl, opt for hot pink, burgundy, red or orange. Most of these colors can work even if you don’t know the baby’s sex. You can also assume most gifts will be in bags or wrapping paper adorned with little teddy bears, bows or ballerinas. Therefore, look for more sophisticated options, like bold stripes, zig zags or polka dots to stand out from the pack.
You can also decorate your gift by tying a thick ribbon around it and then hanging small items from the bow. Good items to use are a tiny pair of sneakers or shoes, a pair of baby sunglasses or a small Christmas ornament. Or, can pick something that matches the theme of your gift to adorn the box. If you are giving a newborn towel and terry robe set as a gift, roll tiny washcloths to make the bow, or add a pair of fuzzy bunny slippers on top of the gift. Finally, if time is short, instead of wrapping, you can always pick a pretty hatbox big enough to hold your gift.
