Other than selecting a gown, undoubtedly nothing creates more angst and stress for a bride than choosing a hairstyle for the big day. But it doesn’t have to be that way. With just a little planning and practice, you, too, can find the perfect hairstyle. One that complements your gown, flatters you, and requires minimal fuss.
The following advice, provided by expert stylist and colorist, Cindy Wyman, (a.k.a. “Hairdresser to the Stars” by her legion of satisfied clients,) can help you to avoid a “bridal bad hair day.”
The “Dos”
- For brides who are really confused as to how they’d like to wear their hair, “a picture is worth a thousand words…” Spend some time on the internet researching hairstyles. There are a lot of great Web sites out there where you can get ideas and download pictures of styles you like. Be realistic though, and select styles that suit your hair type (e.g., natural curl, ethnic, etc.) Otherwise, you may spend your wedding day battling your hair instead of enjoying yourself. Here are a couple of sites to check out http://www.weddinghairstyles.org, and http://www.brides.com/beauty/hairstyles.
- Choose a hairstyle that works with your gown and shows it off. If your gown consists of lots of beautiful, intricate detail work that you paid thousands for, don’t hide it by wearing your hair down.
- Select a stylist that you trust; this is your wedding day! If you don’t have a regular stylist, get a reference from family or friends.
- Trim and color your hair 2-3 weeks before your wedding day. If you don’t usually color your hair, get a nice gloss or shine rinse to give it a beautiful glow.
- Schedule a “trial run” with your stylist 2-3 weeks before the wedding. Go to it armed with photos of your preferred hairstyles, a camera, and an honest friend. Try out each hairstyle and have your friend take a picture of each so you can compare them later and decide on your favorite.
Important: Be sure to bring your veil!
The “Don’ts”
- Refuse to change or adjust your hairstyle the day of the wedding. Depending on your hair type, weather can complicate things. Cindy shared a story of a bride who was insistent on wearing her hair down. Her wedding day brought a tropical storm! To this day, the stubborn bride thanks Cindy for convincing her to do otherwise.
- Wash your hair the day of the wedding. At first blush, this may sound gross, but in reality, um…slightly dirty hair holds a style better. Best to wash hair the day before.
Be on Guard
From past experience, Cindy warns to be wary of veils with “lots of combs” to attach to the hair. They can cause headaches and be disastrous for updos. Another veil warning concerns “blushers,” the part of the veil that covers the face. Blushers can also wreak havoc with updo hairstyles.
So, as you ponder your wedding day hairstyle, remember these little nuggets of wisdom. With the help of a good stylist, your wedding day ‘do will be stunning!
