History and Production Methods
Büttenpapierfabrik Gmund is Germany’s finest traditional paper mill, located in the village of Gmund in the Bavarian Alps. Owned by the Kohler family for nearly a century, the Gmund paper mill is renowned for a culture of papermaking that combines meticulous, old world craftsmanship with modern production methods and innovative designs.

Throughout the years, Gmund has earned the reputation of producing some of the finest and most luxurious paper on the market. Gmund currently offers 26 unique collections, one being the Gmund Color System, the first real color system for fine papers.
The beautiful, handmade character of the paper is the result of a slow, careful, production process combined with the use of top grade raw materials, such as totally chlorine-free wooden or cotton pulp - a recipe proven to produce exquisite paper for extraordinary applications. Each sheet is hand inspected for quality.

The mill uses two paper machines. One of the machines, installed in 1883, continues to produce 15 tons of paper each day. It is the oldest working paper machine in all of Europe, working at very low speeds to achieve results of the highest quality. A second machine of modern design was installed in 1980 and revised in 2000 in order to meet the growing needs of the paper market. Together, the two machines produce 4000 tons of fine text and cover papers each year. Most of this paper is exported to Western Europe, Asia and America. Gmund has over 150 exclusive distributors in 70 countries.

Gmund places the highest priority on the conservation of raw materials and the use of ecologically harmless production methods. The mill is set in one of the most beautiful areas of Germany, inspiring a natural desire to protect the local environment. Production wastes are recycled by over 95%, and the colors and fillers used are environmentally friendly. Water from the nearby Mangfall river is used as an energy source, covering about 60% of Gmund’s annual electricity requirement. Gmund papers are certified by the FSC.

Vice Versa Collection
Vice Versa is the latest in fine, textured papers from Gmund. This collection is young, simple and trendy with a soft, subtle Vergé embossing. The name for this collection comes from the matching light-and-dark shades of color combinations. Pelagus, a deep sea blue, is a perfect match for Rivus, a light icy blue. The rich, dark red of Vinum complements the lighthearted pink called Rosa. The star of this collection is the brilliant yellow Crocum (highly anticipated as a coming-in color). There are eight beautiful pairs in total.
Vice Versa papers are suitable for many types of common printing techniques, including offset printing, hot foil stamping, blind embossing, die cutting and steel engraving.
