Selecting a name for your baby is an enormous undertaking. Some parents-to-be become so overwhelmed that they don’t know where to start. Although there’s no official method for finding the perfect name for your baby, there are several steps that can help lead you to a name perfectly suited for your child.
Sometimes, it’s easiest to start by just sitting down with a pen and paper and quickly making a list of ten to fifteen names - sort of a brainstorming session. Write down the first names that come to mind. Most likely, you’ll have mentally tucked away a few names which struck your fancy and they’ll probably be near or at the top of your list. Do this exercise for both male and female names, unless you already know your baby’s sex.
At this point, both parents should review the other’s list, crossing off names that they dislike. If you end up with only a few names after this review, you’re off to a good start.
Next, parents should discuss and agree upon guidelines for name selection. Do you both prefer a cultural or ethnic name? Would you rather it is trendy or traditional? Is it okay for the name to be shortened to a nickname? Does the number of syllables matter as well as the name’s first initial? This all might sound nit-picky, but not to the parents involved.
Don’t feel you need to make a decision right away. Agree to take time and think things over. And during this time, be alert to other names that appeal to you.
As you continue along with your name quest, be sure to use the Internet as a resource. Type the words “baby names” into your favorite search engine. You’ll be amazed at the sites you’re presented with, all loaded with thousands of possibilities.
As your search narrows, pay attention that the names under consideration aren’t ones that would make good teasing material. Ask family members and friends for their opinions, but remember, regardless of what they say, the final decision is yours.
Lastly, have fun with the process, take your time, and enjoy it. If you do, you’ll be sure to pick the perfect name for your baby.
